Art of Archaeopteryx

Two students examine a mural in the new Art of Archaeopteryx exhibit.

Today, our senior class took advantage of the empty museum to explore the new Art of Archaeopteryx exhibit! It was fascinating to see the evolution of artistic depictions of Archaeopteryx over time. To highlight just how much things have changed, we wandered over to the Great Hall and talked about how modern illustrations are different from Zallinger’s famous mural.

It’s easy to dismiss Zallinger’s mural as outdated, but the truth is, scientists had little to work with at that time! To illustrate just how difficult it is to reconstruct an animal’s appearance using only its skeleton, we had students try their hand at drawing a few different creatures…with hilarious results.
